Where your data goes
Transcribing happens in this browser, but using a website still involves ordinary network requests. In detail:
- Your text
- Transcribed in this browser. It is not sent to this site or anyone else, not put in any web address and not written to logs.
- Pages, pronunciation data and the IPA font
- Downloaded from this site like any web page. The data file holds the whole dictionary of the chosen system, never a request for your words.
- The host
- The site is served through Cloudflare. As with any website, the host receives your IP address, the page addresses you request and your browser’s standard request headers in order to deliver the pages. The operator has not yet published the host’s log settings, so no retention period is promised here.
- Reading aloud
- Uses only a voice installed on this device through the browser’s speech engine. Online voices are never used, and the voice list is read only after you open Read original text.
- Settings
- The chosen pronunciation system and layout can be kept in this browser’s local storage. Nothing else is stored, and your text never is.
- Worksheet hand-off
- Make worksheet keeps the current transcript in this tab’s session storage for at most 5 minutes; the worksheet page removes it as soon as it reads it.
- Project files
- Only when you choose Save project: the file goes to your device. This site cannot see or delete it.
- Anonymous task summaries
- Off. This build has no statistics service, offers no switch and sends nothing about your tasks.
- Feedback
- Only what you put in a report and send yourself by email; see Help.
Clear what this browser keeps
This clears the saved system and layout choice and any worksheet hand-off in this tab. It cannot delete files you downloaded, and it does not affect any other site.
Transcripts are not stored: a transcript lives only in the open transcriber or worksheet page and is gone when you reload or close it. Clear current transcript removes a worksheet hand-off that has not been opened yet.
Anonymous task summaries
The site is designed to accept, only with your consent, one anonymous summary per task with the fields below and nothing else: no text, no words, no address and no identifier that links visits. In this build the feature is off: there is no statistics service, no switch and no request. If it is switched on in a later version, it will be off by default, it will honour Global Privacy Control and Do Not Track, and summaries from volunteers will not be presented as figures about all users.
