Accessibility and Keyboard Use

The target is WCAG 2.2 level AA. It is a goal, not a certification: the site has not been audited against it. Every page works with a keyboard, all controls have text names, and status is always written out, not shown by colour alone.

Keyboard

• The first Tab on every page reaches Skip to main content.
• In the transcriber, Ctrl+Enter (Cmd+Enter on a Mac) transcribes; Enter alone adds a new line. The page takes over no other shortcut.
• Undo and Redo for word edits are buttons, so Ctrl+Z inside the text box keeps undoing your typing as usual.
• Open a word with Enter or a click. In the word editor, Tab stays inside the editor and Escape closes it, asking first if you changed something.
• Review next moves to the next word that needs attention, in the order of the text.
• On the IPA keyboard page every key is a button with the symbol’s name; Delete last symbol removes whole characters, including marks.
• In Safari, links are reached with Option+Tab unless “Press Tab to highlight each item” is on in Safari’s settings.

Focus and announcements

• Closing the word editor returns focus to the word; after the last unresolved word, focus moves to the transcript summary.
• On narrow screens a finished transcript scrolls into view and takes focus; on wide screens the result counts are announced.
• Errors are announced politely and linked to the field they concern.
• With reduced motion turned on, nothing animates.

What has been tested

Automated browser tests are run with Playwright’s Chromium build 1243, Firefox build 1543, WebKit build 2359 on macOS, at widths320, 390, 768, 1024, 1440 pixels. Automated WebKit is not the same as Safari, and automated tests do not replace people using assistive technology.

A manual review with a screen reader and on real phones has not been done for this version yet, so no result from one is claimed here.

Known limits and alternatives

• IPA symbols are shown in the Charis font. If it does not load, a fallback font is used and the page offers Retry IPA font; copied text is unchanged.
• Reading aloud depends on a voice installed on your device. Without one, the transcript text remains available for your own screen reader.
• Printing depends on your browser’s print dialog; turn off extra headers and footers there to match the preview.
